| Melding
undeniable pop hooks, ball-busting guitar rock and clever
lyrics, Boink! is exactly what the world needs now. In a
time when regurgitated Nu Metal and remodeled teen cheese
prevail, thank God for the relief that new rock bands like
The Strokes and The White Stripes have brought to the otherwise
grim scene that is modern radio. But where have all the ass-kicking
female rockers gone? Well, the LA-based punk-pop band Boink!
snagged three of them, and they're stampeding your local
radio station as we speak, guitars and guts in tow. Oh, and
there are also a couple of dudes going along with them. Twenty-two-year-old
lead singer Antonia Romeo delivers vein-popping
vocals that are both raucously raw and polished. Her frenetic
energy, feisty Œtude and bawdy sense of humor
are the perfect foil to her brown-eyed-girlish
appearance. Romeo looks like Gwen Stefani's younger
sister
with the charisma and sex appeal to match. In the
song Re-habit she rants about her addiction to
a loser boyfriend, I'd
dump you just to spite you, but I think it might
excite you, and I wouldn't want to show that I
care. Romeo's
lyrics cover an eclectic range of subjects, from
the hard-rocking Walk of Fame about homeless teens
in Hollywood
to the frenzied pop anthem Toxic Overload about
being held hostage by a hyperactive mind.
Precision
harmony vocals sung by rhythm guitarist Kristee
Lively push the aural experience past the threshold. Romeo
and Lively's vocal synergy is reminiscent of that
in the B-52's and Veruca Salt. While Lively resembles
Christie Brinkley at 21, Boink!'s bass-player
Andrea Zermeno has a tough, but sexy Joan Jett
sensibility, and she can play like a mother#@$%er!
Boink!'s
male constituency includes lead guitarist and maestro
songsmith Tommy Henriksen who also co-produces
the band. Henriksen kicks, jumps and flails like an over-caffeinated
cartoon character. The play between Henriksen and
Romeo is electric and often hilarious. Drummer Glen
Sobel,
formerly of the band P.O.L. has Dave Grohl-like
chops and helps Henriksen cope with all of the estrogen. Boink!
is smashing the mold into pieces with incredible
songs, unstoppable energy, and three kick-ass female
rockers.
Their sound has been described as the B-52's
meets the Hives with a touch of Hole. You might also
want to throw a little Ramones into the mix. And yes,
they
sound amazing live. They¹ve been playing
around LA since June and have already sold 5,000
copies
of their EP. |
